Indoor Gardening Made Simple
Set up and grow fresh food indoors year-round with the right lights, systems, and simple routines for success.

Growing Food Year-Round, No Matter Where You Live
There was a time when gardening had a beginning and an end.
Spring meant preparing the soil.
Summer brought long days in the garden.
Fall filled the pantry.
Winter...
Winter meant waiting.
For many years that was simply the rhythm of our lives. We enjoyed every season, but once the garden was put to bed, we waited patiently for spring to arrive.
Today, our thinking has changed.
Rather than viewing gardening as something we do for only a few months each year, we've come to see it as something that can become part of everyday life.
That's what indoor gardening has done for us.
It has transformed gardening from a season into a lifestyle.
Why We Garden Indoors
People grow food indoors for many different reasons.
Some want fresh herbs within arm's reach of the kitchen.
Others enjoy harvesting lettuce in the middle of winter.
Some simply love watching something grow when everything outside is covered in snow.
For us, indoor gardening serves a much bigger purpose.
It helps us become a little more self-reliant.
Every head of lettuce we harvest is one less we need to buy.
Every handful of herbs means fewer trips to the grocery store.
Every tray of microgreens provides incredibly fresh nutrition that takes only days to produce.
Will an indoor garden replace the grocery store?
Of course not.
That isn't the goal.
The goal is to produce as much fresh, healthy food as practical while enjoying the process along the way.
More Than Food
As we've grown older, we've realized something unexpected.
Gardening isn't just about vegetables.
It's about purpose.
Walking into the garden each morning.
Checking on new seedlings.
Watching tiny plants become tomorrow's meals.
These simple routines give structure to the day and provide something to look forward to.
Indoor gardening allows us to enjoy that experience every month of the year, regardless of the weather outside.
Even on the coldest January morning, there's still something green growing inside.
A Better Way to Start Outdoor Gardens
One of the biggest surprises has been how much indoor gardening has improved our outdoor garden.
Instead of buying seedlings every spring, we now grow many of our own.
We can select the exact varieties we want.
Start them at the right time.
Watch them develop into strong, healthy transplants.
By the time they're ready to move outside, they're already thriving.
That gives our outdoor garden a tremendous head start each season.
Indoor Gardening Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
One misconception keeps many people from getting started.
They believe indoor gardening requires expensive equipment, complicated hydroponic systems, or an entire room dedicated to growing food.
It doesn't.
Our goal has never been to build a commercial greenhouse inside our home.
Our goal is much simpler.
Create a system that's easy to manage...
Produces fresh food year-round...
Fits comfortably into our home...
And continues to be enjoyable for years to come.
Whether you have an unused corner of a room, a shelving unit in the office, or an extra bedroom, it's possible to grow a surprising amount of food in a relatively small space.
What You'll Learn in This Guide
Over the years we've experimented with seed starting, indoor vegetables, herbs, lighting, shelving, hydroponics, soil growing, and countless different growing methods.
Some worked wonderfully.
Others taught us valuable lessons.
Throughout this guide we'll share what we've learned, including:
Planning your indoor growing space
Choosing shelves and lighting
Growing in soil versus hydroponics
Starting healthy seedlings
The easiest crops for beginners
Growing leafy greens year-round
Herbs that thrive indoors
Watering and fertilizing
Common mistakes to avoid
Equipment we actually use
Everything in this guide is designed around one simple idea.
Indoor gardening should make life easier.
Not more complicated.
Our Philosophy
You'll notice something as you read through this guide.
We aren't trying to grow everything indoors.
We aren't trying to become completely self-sufficient.
Instead, we're trying to become more self-reliant.
There is a difference.
Every tomato seedling we start ourselves...
Every salad we harvest...
Every handful of fresh basil...
Every tray of microgreens...
Every lesson we learn...
Moves us one small step closer toward living the lifestyle we've always enjoyed.
That's what Homesteading 2.0 means to us.
It isn't about how much land you own.
It's about making the most of the space you have.
